At Western Fertility Institute, we understand that families come in all shapes and sizes. Just as many couples choose not to have children, many single people decide to start families on their own. Ultimately, having a baby is a personal choice — and we think it’s one everyone should have the ability to make, regardless of relationship status.
People stay single for several reasons. They may still be looking for the right partner, or they may be perfectly happy living outside of a romantic relationship. You don’t need to have a partner to become a great parent. In fact, with modern technology and the help of a supportive care team, conceiving as a single woman is well within reach.
If you’re thinking about becoming a single parent, you’re not alone — we’re here to support you every step of the way!
There Are Plenty of Options for Conceiving While Single
At Western Fertility Institute, we offer a number of options for patients who want to conceive while single. Although the right method varies from person to person, two procedures that could help you conceive include:
- Intrauterine insemination (IUI): In intrauterine insemination, semen from a donor is inserted directly into the uterus through a long tube. IUI can be performed at a fertility clinic in just a few minutes, and the process is typically painless. This makes a good option for conceiving as a single woman if you have a healthy reserve of eggs. It could also help you if you’ve had difficulty conceiving in the past.
- In vitro fertilization (IVF): IVF is a procedure that can help you become pregnant by implanting an already fertilized egg into the uterus. Because eggs are fertilized using donor sperm outside of the body in IVF, you can opt to use your own eggs or eggs from a donor. This method has a slightly higher success rate than IUI at 37-40% for the first cycle, although both options could provide the results you desire.
In addition to choosing between IUI and IVF, your doctor can also help you make other decisions that are important in this process. For example, you’ll need to choose between receiving a sperm donation from a known or anonymous donor. If you’re unable to become pregnant for any reason, or if you prefer not to undergo pregnancy yourself, you can also choose to work with a surrogate.
