If need be, lean on your partner, friend or trusted babysitter so that you can enjoy a few hours of guilt-free alone time.

2. Connect With Other Surrogates

Surrogacy can feel like a lonely journey. The truth is, there are many surrogates out there who would love to bond over your shared experiences. Seek out other surrogate mothers on social media or through your surrogate agency. Then, start a private Facebook group or schedule FaceTime calls to offer encouragement and support. Talking with like-minded women who understand what you’re going through can be all you need on your toughest days.

3. Spend Time With Your Kids and Partner

Being a surrogate mother is something you share not only with the intended parents but also with your own family. Amid doctor’s appointments and clinic visits, it’s essential to set aside quality time to spend with your partner and children. Talk to your kids about your pregnancy and reassure them that they’re your world. And don’t forget to carve out “no kids allowed” time when you and your partner can reconnect.

4. Follow Your Intuition

Listen to your gut throughout your surrogacy. This is especially important when you’re choosing your intended parents and talking about your preferences for relationship-building and communication. You’ve chosen a selfless path, but you should also speak up if something doesn’t feel right. In moments of uncertainty, use your support squad for guidance.

5. Cherish Your Delivery Day

The look on the intended parents’ faces when they hold their baby for the first time. That moment is what many surrogate mothers most look forward to. In conversations with the intended parents, talk about your preferred birth experience. You may even consider booking a birth photographer to capture this life-affirming moment. Whatever you decide, your delivery day will be absolutely worth it.
